Editing someone else’s paper I learned some things that could help me with my own essay. I picked up on the fact that I need to add more detail after my quotes. I think that by doing this it will help further my overall argument in my essay.

After reading and reviewing, “Is it OK to make art?,” and watching, “How Can Public Art Projects Transform Rough Neighborhoods?,” I noticed that the two had an abundance of similarities. These two articles gave me a completely new view on what art actually does for the world. In “How Can Public Art Projects Transform Rough Neighborhoods?,” Dre Urhahn and Jeron Koolhaas are able to transform rough areas that are struggling into colorful beautiful places that the people who live there now feel a sense of pride in the place they call home. Both of these articles show the power of what art can do for people and that you can do more to help society by just donating money.

The brainstorming activity gave me the opportunity to be able to get my ideas down on paper and helped me compare the articles. I feel like it was a good chance to see how similar these two articles really are. It definitely helped with comparing the articles and gave me a good idea what I am going to write for the essay.

In the Ted Talk “How Can Public Art Projects Transform Rough Neighborhoods?”, artists Dre Urhahn and Jeroen Koolhaas aim to get rid of the notion of certain “bad neighborhoods” by creating art throughout them. Dre talks about how when he has out in Rio spending a lot of time with the people he noticed that “there was this constant return of the word image”. Dre decided to make a difference.

As Dre states, “Like, this happened, and the we thought, oh, my God, if this happened in – on the small scale, let’s build it out”. I think that it is really cool how they didn’t even plan on doing this when they went to Rio and the fact that after they did it and chose to continue is pretty cool.

I think that what Dre and Jeroen are doing is really something special. They are bringing a sense of “light” to communities that need art to help keep people’s spirits. Just by changing what the area looks like it really has transformed how people think about their homes.

After reading “Is It OK to Make art?” by Rhys Southan for a second time, I think that I was able to get a better feel and idea for the text. I think the first time I read the article I was more focused on the annotation of it and not the actual text. I definitely picked up on more the second time reading. I picked up on the fact that Southan does not use any biased in the article and just uses straight facts. I also noticed how the EA paints such a negative image of artist and say that they contribute little to nothing in the effort to helping the world. After reading this for the second time my opinion of the EA changed greatly. At first, I thought that they were right with their views but now that I read it again they are giving off a message not to follow your dream and I don’t agree with that.

I was also able to get a better understanding for the reading by finding out what the word Altruism means. Altruism means”belief in or practice of disinterested and selfless concern for the well-being of others”. This helped me get a better understanding for the EA’s mind set on everything and how they handle their business.

In the article “Is it OK to make art?” by Rhys Southan, there were a bunch of parts that really got me thinking and start to question things that I thought I knew. One part of the article that I found very intriguing was when she said, “…that the thing you most enjoy isn’t the most moral thing to do”(Southan). Throughout the whole article people are constantly telling Southan that her dream of being a film maker is unrealistic and that it will never work out into anything important. There is a constant underlying theme in this article about how if you love something but it doesn’t make sense financially then you should not pursue it. I personally think that this is nonsense, if you love something and it makes you happy then you should chase that dream for as long as possible.

Another part of the article that I found worthy of bringing up was when she says, “… one artist is as pretty much as useful as the next and of course, the supply is plentiful”(Southan). This quote shows so much disrespect towards artist like they are just so easily replaced, like they could go buy them at the store. This just shows how little some people think of artist and that they are just the same, when in reality every artist is unique from each other. Replaceability comes up multiple times in the article. Southan talks about how people are always being replaced no matter how much good work you do, there is always someone out there that companies will hire to replace you.

I did enjoy reading this article, it gave me a new insight on a couple different things. It also showed me an important life lesson that no matter what people tell you whether it be about your dream or future, just do what you love and makes you happy.
